Children of Laos is a project I have been working on to get children from a rural Lao village into school. The money raised will go towards funding school places and books as well as basic necessities like shoes. The Story Behind a Great Cause
Laos has always captivated me with its rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, and the remarkable generosity of its people. My first visit left me yearning for more, a deeper dive into the heart of this extraordinary country.
In 2022, driven by a desire to uncover the real Laos, I embarked on a journey to the remote northern mountains, home to diverse ethnic minorities. My adventure took an unexpected turn during the rainy season, when devastating floods severed all main roads to the North. My driver, Watt, who has since become a dear friend, suggested a detour to his cousin’s village as we waited for the roads to reopen. Although only a few hours from Luang Prabang, it felt like stepping into another world.
Perched atop a mountain, the village is a harmonious blend of Hmong and Khmu communities, accessible only by a two-hour walk from the nearest road. Watt’s cousin graciously welcomed me into her home, where we shared a delicious evening meal. The experience of playing with the children and meeting the families is a memory I’ll treasure forever.
Wanting to contribute, I bought books and pencils for the village school - a modest structure built by the French years ago and one of the few buildings not made from bamboo. The gratitude from the school was heartfelt, yet it felt like just a drop in the ocean.
The next day, I noticed many children absent from school. I soon discovered the heartbreaking reality: numerous families couldn’t afford the mere few dollars for their children’s education. Most families subsist on what they grow, with no surplus income for schooling.
I spoke with the principal, one of the three dedicated teachers, and compiled a list of children unable to attend school due to financial constraints. The list was a stark reminder of the urgent need for support.
Back in South Korea, I returned to my previous job, but my heart remained in that village. I am now committed to raising funds to ensure every child gets the education they deserve. This is where I need your help.
The money we raise will primarily cover school fees, but also address other basic needs such as blankets, soap, and clothing, crucial for getting through the mountain winters. With enough donations, we can extend our support to other villages facing the same hardships.

The fundraiser has been really successful! I am genuinely so pleased with how much everyone helped out. We have returned to the village on a few occasions already and plan to be back in the near future. It’s never too late to donate and be part of this great cause.
